Balagtas Family Reunion

The last two weeks have been exciting and exhausting.

Last April 5, I flew to Cerritos California to visit my sister, brother and their families. My parents were also there visiting and arrived there last March. I was quite surprised when I got to the Los Angeles airport since it felt like I was in the Philippines because, most of the employees i have seen at the airport were Filipinos. LA have so many people with different races that you wouldn’t know which country you are in if you just appear there magically hehehe.

The few days that I stayed in California was spent by doing some shopping (ahem), watching the movie Nim’s island together with my sister and her kids, and helping my sister with some household chores like cleaning and doing the laundry. She has four adorable-but-oh-so-kulit kids (12,11,6 and 7 years old) and it’s quite a challenge to ask them to help around the house. I also visited my brother’s house a couple of times, mostly to eat dinner hehehe.

Last April 9, the whole family flew to Las Vegas to meet the other half of the clan :). We watched several shows like Mamma Mia, The Worlds’ Greatest Magic Show and Cirque de Soleil (Ka and Mystere). We also spent a lot of time in the pool which explains my ’sunog’ color :). After more than a year of not going to the beach, I was happy to fry myself under the sun and swim to my heart’s content. And ofcourse, other than the wholesome activities, we also hit the slot machines… what’s the use of going to Las Vegas if you’re not going to do a little gambling right? hehehe.

After Las Vegas, the other half of the family went back to California, while my parents, sisters (and family) and I flew to Virginia. Since I only had little time to spend there (and was able to visit it before anyway), I didn’t do much sight seeing. Last Saturday, my sister enrolled us in a cooking class where we were taught to bake some desserts. The class was divided to three groups and each group has to make one type of dessert. Our group was assigned to bake some Meringue with some coconut and topped with glazed mango. Aside from the assigned desserts, every group was also asked to make chocolate mousse. After the class, all of us ate the four types of desserts (chocolate mousse, strawberry shortcake, meringue and some pie). Grabe! Super busog kami (at medyo nasusuka dahil puro matatamis ang kinain namin hehehe). That night, my sister’s parents-in-law invited us for dinner and had a birthday cake prepared for us four April birthday celebrants (papa, mama, ate M and me).

The vacation was fun since I get to spend time with my family, but it was also very exhausting for me. Now, I’m happy that I’m back to my normal routine (and have a little peace and quiet hehe) and back to my dear hubby.

Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose

Easter Holidays

It’s a cold and quiet Thursday today in the lab. There are only 3 people present in my floor and 1 person in the second floor. It seems like people are already taking an early vacation since tomorrow is a holiday which is Karfreitag or Good Friday which will last till Ostermontag or Easter Monday (the day after Easter Sunday? Don’t ask me, Ostermontag is also new to me… hehehe). It’s quite nice to have some peace and quiet though and to be able to gather my thoughts and think about my research… but the problem is… I have all the resources and silence that I need in order to be productive, but I’m just not in the mood to do anything with regards to research today :(. I just downloaded some papers that I’m supposedly going to read during the holidays, just to accomplish something (plus this blog entry hehe). I just hope I’ll have enough will power to finish reading at least one paper :).

Tomorrows plan basically consist of visiting some churches around the Marienplatz area and have dinner at a friend’s house. It’s kind of strange people greeting me Frohe Ostern or Happy Easter, when Good Friday hasn’t even passed yet. I hope the weather won’t be as nasty tomorrow as what is shown in the weather forecast, although it would be a good form of penance to go outside at -4 degrees Celcius (plus rain).

Well… just to copy what the Germans do, I’ll just greet everyone in advance…

Happy Easter! Frohe Ostern!
